Multidisciplinary cancer care is a team-based approach to breast cancer treatment that involves multiple health professionals working together to create a personalized treatment plan for each patient. These decisions are based on standardized recommendations and guidelines.
Dr. Coste participates in multidisciplinary care at Holy Cross Michael and Dianne Bienes Cancer center, which includes a team of breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, oncology nurses and psychological, social and spiritual support personnel. A Patient Navigator is also available to help coordinate the interactions and guide the patient through the process. On-site genetic testing and counseling is available as well.
Each week our Breast Cancer Clinic allows new breast cancer patients to receive timely treatment and counsel. The doctors discuss the patients' cases in conference with other medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, pathologists and breast radiologists together in one room. The research nurse specialist informs the physicians about clinical trials for which the patients may be candidates. Together, the team determines the plan of care, and that individualized plan is communicated to each patient.
Patients and their caregivers also meet with the oncology social worker to review the services and support available to patients, including the new patient packet and our resource library. Patients are given a tour of the Cancer Center and information on available support groups and programs.
